Plinth and base slab details are where moisture, frost heave, and soil compaction meet. If an insulation board absorbs water under the damp-proof course, its thermal resistance collapses and perimeter thermal bridges open into the screed.

Why perimeter insulation needs closed-cell XPS

Unlike fibrous insulation or standard EPS, extruded polystyrene (XPS) features a closed-cell matrix with near-zero water absorption under diffusion and freeze-thaw cycles. On Hungarian building sites, basement perimeter walls and grade-level plinths require high compressive strength at 10 % deformation and verifiable long-term moisture resistance.
